When I put on my first pair of thick eyeglasses at the age of two, it was like stepping out of a fog. The world came alive with textures, lines, and subtleties that my two-year-old mind had not dreamed of.
That sudden jolt into clear eyesight stirred my imagination, and I believe, helped lead me to the world of art. At age six, I watched, transfixed, as an artist on a TV show illustrated scenes from a book using charcoal and pencil. Though the drawings were simple, I was captivated. To this day, using simple tools to create lifelike images on paper mesmerizes me.
Drawing has a directness and a fresh spontaneity that I love. Oil pastel gives me the immediacy of drawing while also yielding intense colors and a buttery feel that is seductive. Nearly untapped in the professional art world, it has become my favorite medium.
At times in my studio, everything works together: color choices come quickly, my hands are confident, and drawing is no longer a conscious effort. It becomes intuitive, and I fall into a rhythm that seems to match the music coming from my record player. This is where I am most refreshed, relaxed, and renewed.
Light and shadow play a crucial role in my pieces. They can make a seemingly unremarkable scene riveting in my eyes. I can feel the warmth of the sunlight as it spills and reflects on an orange chair with a fiery glow. Simple things become sublime. Using a vivid palette, along with my appreciation for detail and composition, I celebrate the uncomplicated moments around me. It is my desire to show that these often-overlooked moments can be not only introspective, but stunning.
